  7.    convultions of its death were so violent that the galaxy was thrown
  8.    into a dark age that lasted nearly a thousand years.  Hundreds of worlds
  9.    were devastated by the great wars at the end of the era.  Many more
  10.    simply stagnated and decayed as they lost contact with Earth.  In the
  11.    end, what was once a cohesive and monolithic unit spanning the stars
  12.    of known space, degenerated into a dozen loose kingdoms trying to 
  13.    maintain control over their own territories.  As the dark ages pro-
  14.    gressed, even these kingdoms disappeared.  Entire worlds lost the
  15.    technology to travel across the stars.  World by world the galaxy
  16.    regressed thousands of years in the history of humanity..."

  20.  It is four thousand years after the collapse of the First Empire.  Although 
  21.  not fully recovered from the cataclysm, the galaxy is slowly beginning to 
  22.  unite once again.  Worlds have formed federations and federations have 
  23.  turned into empires.  And although hundreds of worlds are still living 
  24.  unaware that other humans inhabit the stars, there is a renewed hope in the 
  25.  galaxy that a Second Empire will rise out of the first.

  27.  In this scenario, you will start out as the totalitarian ruler of a single
  28.  earth-like world.  For the past few years your world has been building up
  29.  its starfleet, preparing to forge an empire out of the surrounding worlds.
  30.  Though not as technologically advanced as the First Empire, you possess a
  31.  few ancient ships, remanents of another era, that will help you in your
  32.  conquests.  Your ultimate goal is the unification of the galaxy,
  33.  preferably under your flag.
